ADOPTION/SHELTER STARTER SESSION

Adoption/Shelter Starter Session - Euro 35 - approximately one hour in duration

First of all THANK YOU for giving an adolescent dog a fresh start in life - I salute you!

When you bring a shelter dog to your home, there is a period of approximately 3 weeks (can be longer) where the dog may not show any behaviour concerns, or else exhibit them at a very low intensity and frequency. This is a bit like you walking into a room of total stranger and being on your very best behaviour! Once the dog feels more settled you may find that behaviour concerns may start to appear.

To prevent this from happening it is always a good idea to set down Home Boundaries so that the dog will understand what is, and what is not acceptable, and the sooner this commences the easier it will be to mould the new addition into a well behaved menber of your family.

As each and every dog is different, there is no set formula, or exercises that are brought in, rather we will concentrate on teaching you the tools that you are going to need so that you can have two way communication between you and the dog. Some examples are:

Preventing or changing jumping up
The Sit and Down Exercise
The Basic Wait Exercise
The Leave Exercise
Basic Home Boundary modifications
Teaching the dog to take food gently
Preventing Resource Guarding
Building Confidence
The Importance of Chew Toys
Understanding Dog Body Language
How to deal with fear behaviour

If there are any existing behaviour concerns, these will be dealt with at our session. Your session is in the region of an hour and takes place at your home.

Notes on all covered will be supplied within 48 hours of our session.
